The 17514A1 Mercury rod bearing is a caged needle bearing used in the connecting rod assembly of many Mercury outboard engines. This bearing set fits engine models from small 30 HP up to larger 150 HP and beyond, including 30-35-50-55-60-75-90-135-150 and some 175-200 HP applications. It helps reduce friction between the rod and crankshaft during engine operation by supporting smooth rotation under load.
Rod bearings must withstand high RPM and combustion forces while maintaining a stable oil film between moving parts. When the 17514A1 Mercury rod bearing wears or fails, you often hear knocking sounds from the powerhead. That knocking moves in time with RPM and gets louder with engine load. Also, rapid wear may cause metal particles in the oil, low oil pressure, or uneven engine performance. Replacing these bearings with a correct OEM-style bearing helps maintain engine health and prevents damage to rods and crank journals.
Heavy load and long run hours cause normal wear on rod bearings. Because this is a caged needle type, it holds multiple needles in a metal retainer. This design spreads load across a larger surface and reduces early fatigue.
