The 619-15741-01 starter pawls are OEM starter engagement pawls used in the recoil starter assemblies on many Mercury and Mariner outboard engines. These small metal engagement pieces lock into the starter pulley when you pull the starter rope so the engine crankshaft turns and fires. They are critical for reliable starting, especially on engines that use a pull-start system.

Starter pawls sit inside the recoil assembly and engage the starter pulley. When you pull the rope, the pawls move outward and catch the pulley. Then they transfer the pull motion to the crankshaft. When the engine starts, the pawls retract so the pulley can spin freely. If these pawls wear, bend, or break, the pawl may not engage properly. As a result, the starter rope may pull out without engaging the engine, or you might hear slipping inside the recoil unit.

When starter pawls fail, starting becomes unreliable. Sometimes the rope pulls but the engine does not turn. In other cases, the pawls only engage intermittently, which leads to inconsistent starts and frustration. Installing correct-fit starter pawls restores engagement and smooth pull-starting. You may also want to inspect related starter hardware like springs or ropes when servicing the recoil system.
