The 17-81896M Mercury shear pin is an OEM drive shear pin used in older Mercury and Mariner outboard engines. This metal pin acts as a safety link between rotating drive components and the gearcase or propeller assembly. It helps protect internal drive gears and shafts by shearing if the propeller or drive unit hits a hard object.

Shear pins are designed to break before heavier and more expensive parts are damaged. In normal operation, the 17-81896M Mercury shear pin holds powertrain components in place while transmitting torque. However, when a heavy impact occurs, it fails at a predictable point so that only this inexpensive pin needs replacement. This prevents costly gear or shaft damage, especially in shallower water or debris-filled conditions.

This part also pairs with related Yamaha hardware such as straight pin 90250-03M10 for compatible installation and secure fitment.

If your engine suddenly loses propeller drive after a sting or snub while underway, the shear pin may have broken. A broken shear pin typically results in a sudden loss of propulsion without other apparent damage. Replacing it restores proper torque transmission between the drive and gearcase.
